As with any building, Heage Windmill is subject to the ravages of the weather. The tower is built of local ironstone (a form of sandstone) which erodes over time.
The poor condition meant that refurbishment was needed and this work started in Autumn 2024. This involved raking out loose mortar and stone, replacing stone where necessary and repointing.
The work is being carried out in two phases. Work on the upper half of the
tower started in September 2024. Work will resume in June when the lower half of the tower will be stabilised and refreshed.

The stones are being reassembled after they have been serviced, preparing them for some future milling sessions.
A difficult task is the positioning of the two flour scrapers that sweep the flour round the trough and send it down to the floor below,
where it will be bagged as wholemeal or sieved to become white, middlings or bran.
The last task is to reposition the stone nut which drives the upper stone, the runner stone. A hoist is required because of its weight
